Richard's wife was diagnosed with MS. In an effort to help her, he developed a drug to treat MS. However, when the patent on that ran out, he wanted to develop another one. He developed Celinex, but when he realized the drug wasn't working for his wife, he tanked the trial by poisoning the participants with belladonna so he could start over and give his wife a chance.
